President’s Message,
by Sheryl Purcell, MFT
Wednesday November 14 I had the privilege to attend a reception and tour of the Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton. We met with providers of Mental Health Services and Physical Therapy services who gave us an overview of the services they provide to military members and their families. Representatives of Tri Care Insurance were there to answer questions as well. The Naval hospital mental health staff acknowledged the great need there is for community providers of counseling services to supplement the work the stafff provides at the hospital. Working together we can meet the need in the military community during this wartime situation.
We had the opportunity to hear that the Mental Health staff is providing education for the ranks about the mental health services that are available to them on base and in the community. Active duty military are reassured that the services and information such as medication are confidential and that participation in counseling will not affect their rank or viability for promotions or assignments of duty. This is welcome news in a former climate that saw participation in mental health counseling as a sign of infirmity. I predict it will take a lengthy period of time and experience for military personnel to see that this new philosophy is indeed promoted and followed. We were encouraged to keep the counseling staff at the hospital informed of groups that we provide, such as the Wounded Warrior Wives counseling program, which is provided at several locations throughout the area, with the benefit of being free of charge.
It is an honor and a privilege to be part of the counseling services that are available to our military and their dependents. Marriage and family therapists was the largest group represented among professionals such as licensed clinical social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists and physical therapists. Our representation at the reception gave a strong message that Marriage and Family Therapists are involved and eager to assist!
