Is There Really an APP for That?

This session will offer participants an overview of the field and the latest scientific research on the use of interactive smartphone apps in MH and SUD treatment.

Speaker: Rigo Brueck, PhD, LMFT

Pre-registration is required.

Smartphones and hand-held tablets are transforming the way clients’ access and receive Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Mental Health (MH) treatment services. Integrating interactive technologies into clinical care can revolutionize a client’s ability to maintain sobriety, prevent relapse, and increase alumni connection thus boosting positive outcomes while significantly decreasing the cost of care. Smartphone apps are inexpensive and simple tools that are easily accessible so that more individuals with MH and SUD issues can be screened and engaged to seek needed treatment and remain in it. Clients can conveniently access specialized evidence-based treatment protocols to help them manage the complexities of addiction and co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, and stress while at the treatment facility, during aftercare, and at home.

Objective 1 Describe and discuss the latest research on interactive smartphone apps for substance abuse and mental health services.

Objective 2 Contrast the advantages and disadvantages of evidence supported mobile phone technology to enhance the reach and effectiveness of substance use disorder and mental health treatment.

Objective 3 Evaluate how innovative smartphone tools are best suited to attendees’ professional and organizational needs and how to integrate them into clinical practice to improve current treatment services and outcomes.
