Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Speaker: Beth Corrick M.S., LMFT

Sponsor: California Center for Creative Renewal

 Pre-registration is required.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a unique and creative approach to behavior change.  It is a mindfulness-based, values-oriented behavioral therapy, that has many parallels to Eastern philosophy, yet is firmly based in cutting-edge Western research into human behavioral psychology.

The purpose of ACT is to help people lead a rich, full and meaningful life while handling the inevitable pain that arise from the nature of existence.

ACT (which is pronounced as the word “act,” not as the initials) does this through teaching you skills for psychological flexibility.  These skills allow you to deal with your painful thoughts and feelings more effectively and in such a way as they have less impact over you.  (These are known as mindfulness skills.)

The second part, is getting in touch with who or what really matters to you. We call these important and meaningful ideas your values. Working from the basis of your values you can make conscious choices which motivate you to change your life for the better.

In ACT there are three mindfulness skills:

  1. defusion: distancing from and letting go of unhelpful thoughts, beliefs and memories
  2. acceptance: making room for painful feelings, urges and emotions and allowing them to come and go without a struggle
  3. contact with the present moment- engaging fully with you’re here-and-now experience with openness and curiosity
MFT, LCSW, LPCC, Interns, & Grad Students should attend.
